An Artist’s Date

In Julia Cameron’s book The Artist’s Way, I fell in love with the idea of taking yourself on an “artist date”. As described, it is a creative excursion meant to open one up to insight, and inspiration. I use these dates as an opportunity to nurture my creativity, and escape computer screens.

Taking yourself on a date sounded funny at first but finding a way out of your daily routine and doing some creative exploring is good way to get inspired by new discoveries. It can be an art gallery, new restaurant, a vacation, or simply a walk around the mall.

For clarification, this doesn’t have to be a solo experience. One can take friends or family.

In an age when one can do plenty of creative exploring using a web browser, there is a line of thinking that claims a change of location will do you good. And I believe this is an important concept that we should all embrace, especially if you’re in need of a creative jumpstart.

Recently I went on a short artist date to the Cedros Design District in Solana Beach located in San Diego’s North County. It is a walkable street featuring over 85 art galleries, boutiques, antique shops, and cafes. The whimsy of the design work, refreshing use of colors and just the fresh ocean air was invigorating and a joy to explore. By the time I left my creative spirit had been uplifted and I felt inspired to add more playfulness to my work.

The lesson is to get out of the house and make plans to go to a museum, cool exhibit, unique shops, or even a new garden. I have an ongoing list that includes a return visit to The Ken Done Gallery in Sydney, Australia where I fell in love with the artist’s use of cheerful colors that reflects the down under vibe.
